MAC Flirting With Danger Mineralize Blush (swatch)

I looked high and low to find a swatch or review of this blush on someone closer to my skin tone and finally, Lili came to the rescue. If you are a regular here, you should know Lili by now if not from me mentioning her and her blog, then from her helpful thoughts in the comments. We both have dry skin and typically have similar experiences with products. However, we differ a little on the MAC Mineralize Blush formula, so I would suggest checking out her post to get her perspective as well.

MAC Mineralize Blush in Flirting With Danger, $31.00**

MAC describes Flirting With Danger as a burnt red orange.

This blush was as hard as the glow play formula to photograph. When I have this issue photographing them on the color wheel tends to help. Putting the shade against red and red-orange on the color wheel does reveal that there is more depth a cooler lean to this shade. UPDATE: It was so hard to figure out how to explain this color and I thought I had it down but of course a better way to say it just came to me. So my apologies if this ends up being confusing. It is not that it is cooler, it is that the tone has been deepened rather than being a bright red.

It is still very much a warm red-orange shade but on my olive undertone, I lose some of the orange tones for some reason (when sheered out) and it just looks like a red. You can see the red-orange come out more when it is compared to another shade further down in the post.

I’ve tried wearing this with warm-toned foundations (instead of my warm-olive foundations) to see if I could see more of an orange lean to it, but no dice. I do think this is an olive undertone problem that a lot of people won’t experience. If I wear this with warmer lip colors, I can get it to look more orange-leaning. That and how it looks on other skin tones lets me know I’m the outlier in how this color looks. As I mentioned, Lili has also posted about this blush. In terms of formula, Flirting with Danger is one of the matte finishes in MAC’s Mineralize Blush lineup. I don’t find it to be too matte for my dry skin, but some matte blushes that look healthier are the Pat McGrath Divine Blush, Bobbi Brown Powder Blush, and even MAC’s own “signature” matte blushes (Raizin, Burnt Pepper, etc). Keep in mind that while some of these items look matte in a swatch, I’m referring to the fact that they don’t look as dry as the Mineralize Blush formula when applied. This shade is very pigmented but it is easy to blend. I do still have to be careful with it, but it doesn’t feel like a hassle to keep it from going overboard.

MAC Flirting With Danger, $31.00** and Sephora Microsmooth Blush from Captivate Palette, $20.00**

MAC Flirting with Danger is a very unique shade, so it was hard to find a blush for color reference. I think this Sephora MicroSmooth Baked Face Palette may be less well known, but it was as close as I could get in terms of color.

On the upside, this formula is also a similar formula but they are definitely not dupes. If you find the MAC Mineralize Blushes (matte finish) to be too dry, then you might prefer the blush formula in the Microsmooth palette. The Sephora Blush is more radiant on the skin. More product picks up on a brush at a time with the Sephora Blush, but I would be careful with both formulas because they both are very pigmented. I have done a review on the Sephora Microsmooth Baked Face Palette (Captivate) if you want to see swatches of all the shades and my thoughts.

If you like baked blush formulas but would prefer something with some sheen, I have posted swatches of MAC Mineralize Blushes in the shades Love Joy and Love Thing in the past. I do still think that the Sephora Formula looks better and offers more glow without being shimmery, but I don’t dislike the MAC formula.
