Sleeper Hits, Vol 4: Tom Ford Eye Color Quads Honeymoon, Golden Hour, and Peach Dawn (Swatches and review)

In hindsight, I should have never dipped my toe into the world of Tom Ford Beauty. While most of the products I have tried from this brand have been great, I struggle to justify the price tag of any of them. Except for two items (Olive Smoke Quad and Bronze Isle Quad), I purchased my Tom Ford products at the Cosmetics Company Outlet, an outlet store for brands under the Estee Lauder Companies’ Umbrella. Keep in mind that the discount you see varies depending on the in-store promotion currently being offered. For the 40-50% discount I received on my purchases from the outlet, I can see myself repurchasing them in the future. However, at $60 for the Traceless Soft Matte Concealer, $95 – $100 for the Highlighters, and $95 for these Eye Color Quads ($100 for limited edition versions), I won’t be paying full retail price for this brand anymore. And let me tell you, it has been a bit of a rollercoaster coming to that conclusion, especially with these eyeshadow quads, because I really like them and get a lot of use out of them. That is why these became “Sleeper Hits” for me. My first impression was that they are nice, but definitely not worth the retail price. But now, over a year later, they have become a go-to and are one of my favorite eyeshadow formulas to use.

The Tom Ford Eye Color Quads in Honeymoon, Golden Hour, and Peach Dawn contain Tom Ford’s wet/dry baked formula, which is made in Italy. Using this type of formula is more expensive, as it is only manufactured in Italy, where the process is specialized and the labor costs are higher. I wanted to point that out for additional context on price, although there are still cheaper baked eyeshadows available. If you aren’t familiar with the wet/dry formula, it means that when applied dry, the eyeshadows give a soft, sheer look, and when applied wet, they give a bold, dramatic finish. I don’t personally use eyeshadows wet, so I’m not sure how much that helps this formula. However, I don’t think that they apply sheer when applied dry. They have enough opacity for my skin tone to see the colors as they appear in the pan. I can agree that they are soft, though.

Another touch of luxury makeup that Tom Ford includes is a pouch with every compact, along with two double-ended brush/spongetip applicators. My Honeymoon Quad is in red packaging because it was part of a limited-edition collection. It is a permanent quad, though, so it is housed in the traditional brown packaging if you were to buy one now.

These eyeshadows are smooth, pigmented (but buildable), and easy to use. Regardless of brush type or even if I’m using my fingers, they are so easy to apply that they practically blend themselves. They have a good impact on my skin tone (NARS Tahoe/Estee Lauder 4W4, warm olive undertone) while remaining smooth on the lids without any chunky or glittery texture. While this does mean they lean more toward the satin side of eyeshadow finishes, it also means that they don’t accentuate texture issues. All of the shades in the Honeymoon, Golden Hour, and Peach Dawn Quads have some degree of shimmer; there are no matte eyeshadows. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them metallic, but they do have a shinier finish than a satin formula would. The deepest shade in the Honeymoon Quad is the closest thing to a matte in any of the quads that I have. I would describe that one as a satin finish, and it is dark enough to provide depth for my skin tone.

Not having any matte eyeshadows can be a downside for some, so that is definitely something to keep in mind. However, for me, when I’m not reviewing new eyeshadows or taking pictures for reviews, I tend to be a one-and-done eyeshadow kind of girl. So the lack of matte eyeshadows doesn’t bother me. When I want to put something in the crease, I have plenty of matte eyeshadow in other palettes that I can use for that purpose. Or I can use my bronzer for that day. If I’m feeling like I want some depth, each of these quads has a shade that is darker than the others to use in the outer-v. The Honeymoon Quad provides the most contrast for my skin tone, but I still feel like I can achieve the eye looks I’m after with all three.

Final thoughts

If you are wondering if Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quads are worth the money, I’d say no, but it can also depend on what you’re looking for. If you are already a luxury makeup shopper who is ok with the price, I think you will enjoy the Tom Ford Wet/Dry formula. If you are someone who loves baked gelee eyeshadow formulas, I also feel that you’ll enjoy these quads. While there are more affordable baked gelee eyeshadow options, I do like the shades offered by Tom Ford Beauty, and I do appreciate how seamless and easy these are to use. That is all assuming you prefer the softer finish this eyeshadow formula provides over a more metallic or glittery eyeshadow. I would recommend waiting for a sale, as I tend to with most things, because why not? If you are someone who likes high-impact metallics, Glittery/sparkly top coat eyeshadow, or Pat McGrath “special” shades, then you may want to look elsewhere.

Again, these eyeshadows definitely grew on me. I never thought they were bad, but they were so “meh” at first that I just didn’t get the fuss. Considering Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette Quads are $55 and Pat McGrath Luxe Quads are $62, I find it hard to steer anyone toward the Tom Ford Quads. Charlotte Tilbury and Pat McGrath Eyeshadows are different from one another (and different from Tom Ford). Still, at the end of the day, I like the eye looks I get from both of them as much as I enjoy seeing myself in the Tom Ford eyeshadows. I will say, though, my looks come together much faster with the Tom Ford Eye Color Quads than with Charlotte Tilbury or Pat McGrath. Chanel Quads are closer in price to Tom Ford, but are still less expensive at $72 ($86 if limited edition). However, based on my experience with Chanel’s latest Limited Edition Boutons Collection, I would pick a Tom Ford Quad over that formula. And while I can easily make other recommendations for getting a better value, I enjoy using this formula so often that I can’t help but consider it a sleeper hit for me.

  1. I’m still waiting for them to release my perfect color story in the wet/dry formula. However, I don’t mind waiting because I can’t get Tom Ford products at as great of a discount as I used to. lol. I’m like Jamila though…I like them and buy them, but don’t use them enough. I still haven’t even used the last Tom Ford quad I bought, and it’s been years. I can’t explain why.
