Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm and Call Me Sunshine Eyeshadow Palettes (Swatches and Review)

Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm and Call Me Sunshine Eyeshadow Palette Review
Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm and Call Me Sunshine Eyeshadow Palettes

Although it has seen many reformulations, this line is an old standby at the drugstore. I’m pretty sure it was either the summer or fall of 2023 when I first tried the Wet n Wild Color Icon My Lucky Charm (5-pan) and Call Me Sunshine (10-pan) Eyeshadow Palettes. However, this new formula and format of eyeshadow had been released by the brand sometime in 2021. I did post swatches of them on my makeup swatches page, but I didn’t give them much of my attention or do a full review because I figured no one would be interested. Shopping through my stash over the past week or so brought me back to these. Lately, I’ve been contemplating decluttering the Tom Ford Olive Smoke Quad, but I decided to give it one last chance. I am still experiencing creasing issues, no matter what I do, and for a $95 quad, I shouldn’t have to put in that much effort to make it work. I thought to myself, I surely have something else that can give me an olive eye look.

That’s where the shades in the Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm 5-pan palette ($4.99) come in. A couple of the shades reminded me of the Tom Ford quad. They are not dupes, and the shades are different (see swatches below), but I thought of the Tom Ford Quad once I had done an eye look with shades 1 and 2. Plus, it had the benefit of having a matte for blending in the crease, which the Tom Ford Quad lacks. This discovery also prompted me to revisit the Wet n Wild Call Me Sunshine 10-pan palette ($6.49), and I’ve been enjoying both palettes so much this week. I like them both for different reasons, so let’s get into the details in case you’ve ever wondered about these.

For shade reference, my best foundation matches are NARS Tahoe and Estee Lauder 4W4.

Since there are no shade names, I will refer to them as shades 1 through 5, from left to right. Although I used two layers to build up my swatches, the My Lucky Charm palette has great pigmentation (less so with shade 4) and is easy to use. If I’m careful to tap off my brush to help minimize the fallout that I get with a couple of the shades, it isn’t anything uncontrollable. Shades 1, 2, and 3 have more dimension and sparkle than is translated in pictures. They all have a nice contrast between their base and shimmer colors. Shade 1 provides good depth for outer-v and liner without being too shiny, but it still has a nice shine. It has a soft, loose texture and has some fallout. Since the shade is so dark, I had to clean up the fallout with a makeup wipe. I am more careful with it now that I know how it functions, and building it slower does help control the fallout. I have also discovered that I have an easier time controlling fallout when applying it with a brush versus with my fingers.

Shade 2 also has a soft texture with good pigment, and fortunately, I haven’t noticed any fallout with this shade. Shade 3 is drier and less pigmented than shades 1 and 2, but it is easy enough to build up. Although the teal shimmer (shade 3) is quite pretty, especially with its pinky-purple mica particles, I wish it were matte. It still provides some depth, but the sparkles can take away from that a little. Shade 4 is very hard pressed and flaky/dry to the touch. Its performance got better once I used it a few times and kind of broke through the top layer. It still needs to be built up and has a little fallout, but it is workable. The one matte shade (5) is excellent; I like the color choice, the depth of the shade, and its performance. There is no kick-up in the pan, and it is buildable.

In the picture below, I’m wearing Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm – shade 1 (outer-v), shade 2 (rest of lid), and shade 5 (crease)

**The Wet n Wild My Lucky Charm Palette ($4.99) has great pigment and more impact than I recall from my 2023 try. I’ll get more into it next, but I wish the Wet n Wild Call Me Sunshine 10-pan Palette’s shimmers had as much impact as these because I enjoy having more mattes in that palette. The contrasting shimmer and the inclusion of more shimmer particles in general accentuate texture a little more, but these still appear smooth enough on my 42-year-old, eczema-prone eyelids. I’ve definitely been sleeping on this one. If you don’t mind a little fallout and you like pigmented, shimmery eyeshadows (and one smooth matte), this one’s definitely worth trying.

Since there are no shade names, I will refer to the top row as shades 1 through 5 and the bottom row as 6 through 10, from left to right. Although all the shimmer shades appear metallic in swatches, I noticed that some of them pick up less shine once applied (shades 7, 8, and 9). There are still a few pops (shades 2, 4, and 5), so this palette offers both bold and subtle options, which is nice. There is some depth in the palette (shades 6 and 7), but I’m not sure the deepest skin tones will get as much range out of this. The mattes (shades 1, 3, 6, and 10) are easy to blend and also build, and I enjoy that they aren’t messy (no kick-up). Shades 1, 3, and 6 are more pigmented than shade 10 (but 10 isn’t bad). This palette doesn’t have much fallout, and tapping the brush typically takes care of any eyeshadow that might fall (like with shade 6).

Shade 1 is a little too light to really achieve what I want from a transition shade. It does have pigment, but for my NARS Tahoe skin tone, it’s more of either a highlight shade or eraser shade when I need to blend edges. Shade 2 has a soft texture and is the most pigmented shade in the palette. In both shade and pigment, it can quickly overpower a look, so it does need some finesse at times. Shade 3 is the shade I first noticed looking dry when placed over some eczema texture in my crease area. Other than that, it is nicely pigmented, and although not packed with pigment, it is quick to build. Shade 4 is smoother to the touch than I expected based on how chunky it looks in the pan. I consider it a topper shade since it has a lot of sparkle, some translucency, and a slight shift, but it can also be worn alone. Shade 5 doesn’t work for my skin tone (it looks too silver for my preference), but it does have a nice amount of shine. Shades 2, 4, and 5 accentuate eyelid texture more, which is normal for high-shine and sparkly shades.

Shade 6 is another matte without any kick up in the pan, but it is a little softer than the other mattes. It has a little fallout when applied with a shader brush, but tapping off my brush has helped with that. Shades 7, 8, and 9 are standard metallic eyeshadows, but they all lean towards a satin finish. They all feel smooth and take some building to get full color (shade 9 needs the most building). Shade 8 does have a little more shine than 7 and 9. I wonder if these shades would have more impact if they weren’t so close to my skin tone, but can’t say for sure. Shade 9 gives this palette the ability to achieve a neutral-toned look, so I appreciate that it adds even more versatility to the palette. I don’t like pairing it with the other shimmers (except when topped with shade 4), but I like it when paired with the matte shades. Shade 10 is a little ashy on me, but I can use it as a brow bone highlight if I’m careful.

In the picture below, I am wearing Wet n Wild Call Me Sunshine – shade 8 (inner corner), shade 7 (outer third), shade 6 (overlapping in outer-v), shades 1 and 3 (mixed in the crease).

I’m not opposed to a more toned-down shimmer that is more satin than metallic, but lately I’ve just been craving a little more shine. Since I like shade 4 as a sparkly topper, I added it to my look. You can see below how it looks layered on top of my existing eye look. This picture was taken a few hours after the previous one, so the lighting had changed for the day. However, I simply added a little eye primer on top of my look to ensure the shimmers would stick, and applied it on top.

**The Wet n Wild Call Me Sunshine Palette ($6.49) has decent pigment, easy-to-use mattes, satin shimmers, a pop of bright yellow, and a pop of sparkle. The eyeshadows have a firm press in the pan, but they are soft to the touch (except for the duochrome topper, shade 4, which is drier). Since there are 10 shades, I appreciate that it offers a wider variety of finishes and depths. The bright yellow (shade 2) does pack that metallic, bright punch. The shimmery topper (shade 4) can add a twinkly touch to any of the other shades. And if it is right for your skin tone, shade 5 can give you a lighter, cooler pop of color. In addition to being able to use shade 9 to get a neutral look for my skin tone, this palette offers great variety. Although I have been preferring the My Lucky Charm Palette for its intensity, I enjoy the versatility of the Call Me Sunshine Palette.

Final Thoughts

**The Wet n Wild 5-pan Palettes ($4.99) are available in 8 varieties, and the **10-pan Palettes ($6.49) are available in 4 varieties. I chose these two versions because the colors appealed to me, and I was also pleased to find that they didn’t have an eye safety warning. Some shades in this line of Wet n Wild Eyeshadows can cause staining, so they are marked with an asterisk and a warning that they are not suitable for use around the eyes.

I mainly use these with affordable synthetic brushes (Morphe), but they also work well with my natural hair options (Sonia G). I’ve used these eyeshadows with my usual go-to eye primers (MAC and Urban Decay) and a couple I’ve been testing (e.l.f. and Milani). Blending and pigment were good with all of them. Milani helped the matte eyeshadows look less dry over eczema spots, which I’ve also noticed with other eyeshadow formulas. The matte shades don’t look too bad over my eczema texture, but they definitely look better when I wear them with the Milani eye primer. However, for an affordable option, I preferred wearing these eyeshadows with the e.l.f. Lock It Down Eyeshadow Primer. I didn’t experience any creasing issues with these Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadows either, but I did notice some slight fading with the Call Me Sunshine Palette. If you’re not a fan of drugstore eyeshadow, I’m not sure these will change your mind. However, I do think they are a solid choice at the drugstore, especially these days with the ever-rising prices.

This review would actually fit in nicely with my past “What’s Old at X” type of posts. I always make sure to shout out Emily Noel on YouTube because she is the inspiration for that style of review. 1. Wow, the My Lucky Charm shades look stunning! Shade 1 swatches surprisingly darker than it looks in the pan, but I guess it’s for the best as the deepening shade. Very nice!
