If you have to avoid products with lanolin or fragrant lipsticks, these will be a pass for you. But for many, the L’oreal Colour Riche Lipstick ($6.99 @ target.com) is still a cult classic from the drugstore. From what I can find, the Colour Riche line was released in 1985. In 2015, L’oreal released a collection of shades to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Colour Riche Lipsticks. If you are curious, I found a blogger (Simon Simons of Smoonstyle.com) who featured some of the shades in that collection.

I can’t tell if the colors I’m featuring today (Worth It and Worth It Medium) are new releases or repromotes. I assumed they were new since I think Emily Noel on YouTube got them in a recent PR package. However, sometimes, brands send out older releases just to increase awareness. She tried Worth It Medium (635) first in this Brand New Makeup video, and she tried Worth It (601) in this Lip Color Try-On video. Emily Noel is also the inspiration for these “What’s Old at X” types of posts that I do. I’ll list other posts like this if you are interested.

Back to the lipsticks. I have always loved the shades and formula of Divine Wine (762) and Nature’s Blush (840) from this line. However, my gripe has always been with the added fragrance. Oddly enough, I’m not having an issue with the scent of Worth It or Worth It Medium. I also currently own Nature’s Blush (840), but I can’t remember how I handle that one because it’s been a while since I’ve actually worn it. The scent doesn’t strike me as having been changed, though, so I guess my tolerance for it has just shifted. I do think the scent is strong, though, so again, if you prefer fragrance-free lipsticks, these won’t fit the bill. I did add Nature’s Blush to the swatches below as a point of reference. Hopefully, if you are familiar with that shade, it may help. I also have swatches of Worth It and Worth It Medium with Pat McGrath Negligee, Charlotte Tilbury Nude Romance, and Estee Lauder Covetable. Again, just as points of reference, none of the formulas are dupes.

In my opinion, L’oreal makes beautiful, flattering colors. My thoughts on this formula are mostly the same as my thoughts on the Maybelline Color Sensational Cream Lipsticks. They have a nice amount of shine, but I think they are slightly shinier than the Maybelline formula. They are moisturizing, likely due to the lanolin oil being the first ingredient (also Maybelline’s first ingredient). I do consider the texture to be thick, but I do prefer that in lipstick. If you like a thinner formula, I’d check out the Revlon Super Lustrous line. However, the Revlon formula also contains lanolin in the form of C10-30 Cholesterol/Lanosterol Esters. Just something to be aware of for anyone with sensitivities or an allergy to lanolin.

**The L’oreal Colour Riche Lipsticks provide nice pigmentation, are comfortable to wear, and wear down gracefully. As with most cream lipsticks, I get about 4 hours of wear before I feel the need to touch up. I don’t use a straw and drink water and tea all day. I typically touch up after lunch, which usually is about 4-ish hours after I’ve applied. There is still color and a little shine left at that point, but I prefer to bring the full color back by reapplying. I do not need to remove the remaining lipstick for the reapplication to look nice. This formula doesn’t sink into my lip lines or feather into the fine lines around my upper lip. Overall, I think this is a great lipstick, but I do prefer the Maybelline scent. A while after application, I don’t notice the Maybelline scent anymore, which never seems to happen with the one from L’oreal. If scents don’t bother you, but you like packaging, the L’oreal looks and feels nicer. The cap only fits the bullet in one direction due to a notch, but I think the packaging is still nice.

Update May 14, 2025: L’oreal recently added the shade **Worth it Intense (570) to the lineup, so I’ve added the swatch of that shade along with a comparison to Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Intense Lipstick Shade. Clearly, L’oreal has taken some inspiration from Charlotte Tilbury’s creation of a “universal” shade that is altered slightly for varying skin tone depths.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Original Satin Lipstick – Worth It Intense

L’oreal calls this formula satin, but I think it is a cream lipstick. I feel like there is too much shine and slip to consider it satin. I do think these are pigmented, but whether they will give you full color in a single swipe will depend on lip pigmentation. If you have very pigmented lips, you will likely need two swipes, which isn’t bad. Beyond that, I agree with their claims that it is moisturizing and doesn’t “bleed, smear, smudge, or feather.” Do you still use the **L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipsticks? Is the formula still good after all these years? Let me know in the comments section.

That’s all for today. Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Hello! Thank you for these swatches! Do you know how Nature’s Blush compares to Rum Raisin? I have the former but I’ve been thinking about picking up the latter.

    (happy new year!)

    1. Happy New Year to you too! If Revlon Rum Raisin is the shade are referring to, they aren’t in the same color family, so they would suit different looks in my experience. Rum Raisin (swatch here) is a berry tone and Nature’s blush is a warm nude (leaning orange on my cooler toned lips).

  2. Hi ! Just stumbled onto you blog and was wondering if you could help me find a similar shade to L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipsticks 1980’s shade Grecian Lilac. I have been scouring the internet for awhile now and am having no luck!!! Its a blue based grey lavendar pink with shimer….

    1. Hey, thanks for your comment! I’m not familiar with the shade, but based on your description, I’m not coming up with much. The most promising colors were discontinued (NYX Playdate, Revlon Lilac Mist), and they didn’t have shimmer. Revlon Plum Baby seems like a possibility, but I don’t think it has enough grey. Unfortunately, it is not listed with Revlon directly, so it may be on its way to being discontinued. L’oreal Mica is described on Ulta as a frosted plum-pink, so it also may not be grey enough. The swatch for L’oreal Silverstone looks too purple on their website, but looks more grey lavender on Amazon, so that could be another one to look at. Keep in mind that these suggestions are just my interpretation of your description and I haven’t seen any of them in person.

      1. I appreciate the quick reply. Mica and Silverstone were shades I wore during this era, but they are both more “rosey” and darker than this particular shade. It definately was more lavender. It was an amazing shade 😦 I will have to check out MAC.

        Thank you so much
