Estee Lauder is promising just about everything with its new **Futurist Soft Touch brightening Skincealer ($38). They say it has a soft radiant finish, is long-wearing, has medium to full coverage, is non-creasing, will plump fine lines, and it will improve your skin’s hydration over time. That is a lot to deliver on (and I left some things out), and honestly, I think they should have promised less. I’m not even sure how many people pay attention to the claims, so maybe that isn’t much of an issue for some people. For me, I was looking for it to deliver on its claims of a radiant finish, ability to plump fine lines, having medium to full coverage, and lasting throughout my day with minimal creasing.

To start off, I do think the description of the Futurist Skincealer being a soft, radiant finish is a good one. It is not overly glowy, and there are no shimmer particles that I’ve picked up on. However, it does have enough sheen to look healthy without accentuating the hollow area under my eyes. If they hadn’t called it soft radiant, I would have described it as a satin finish. The formula is very easy to blend and works well with both fingers and brush application. I can’t say for sure that it plumps fine lines, but what I can say is that it is very smoothing. There just appears to be less texture under my eyes when I wear this concealer than I typically see with some other formulas.

It has a solid medium coverage with one layer (using most of the product on the doe foot for both eyes) and can be built up to a high-medium coverage. This particular concealer doesn’t leave much product on the doe foot each time it’s removed from the tube. One thing to note about coverage is that I have dark circles and often don’t get full coverage unless I use a corrector. If your under-eye area doesn’t have as much darkness, then you may find this to be full coverage. Some concealers I’ve used that have higher coverage than the Estée Lauder Futurist Skincealer are the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, Huda Beauty Faux Filter Concealer, and the Pat McGrath Sublime Perfection Concealer. I wasn’t able to test this formula as a spot concealer because 4W on its own is too light for that. I’ll talk more about the shade further down.

So the downfall of this concealer for me was the wear. I don’t disagree with it being long-wearing, it definitely stays on my face. The issue is that it does crease, so I don’t like how it looks throughout wear. I do have dry skin, so I can only use a small amount of powder and unfortunately, that amount is not enough to keep the Estee Lauder Futurist Skincealer from moving and settling into most of my lines. This is not the worst concealer I’ve come across for this issue, but I definitely have enough better concealers that I don’t need to keep using this one.

UPDATE May 24, 2024: I have dry skin and find that the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Powder typically reduces my creasing issues without drying out my skin. However, with this concealer, I didn’t have success with it. I had the same creasing issues even after trying it with several powders, including the MAC Mineralize Skinifinish Natural, Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Pressed Powder, NYX HD Finishing Powder, and Westman Atelier Vital Pressed Skincare Powder. I finally had success with the bareMinerals Mineral Veil in Sheer Tan. This combination does create a less radiant finish than when the Estee Lauder Skincealer is worn alone, but it doesn’t look dry and wears well throughout the day. I tend to wear my makeup for 8 to 10 hours, and even in humid weather, I’ve still had good wear time by using the bareMinerals Mineral Veil with this concealer. I occasionally have to pat out some creasing, but that is not unique to this concealer.

4W is slightly too light for my preferences despite wearing 4W4 in the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. I did feel like the shade range was hard to decipher despite being familiar with Estee Lauder’s shade range. The model images made me nervous that 4W would be too light in this formula and that did turn out to be the case. 4W is still my best match in the range because 5W was way too dark and the neutral shades were just too pink for me.

Another thing to keep in mind with dark under-eye circles is that going a little darker with your concealer shade can help with coverage. So not having a better shade match could also be causing me to not get the promised full coverage that I mentioned earlier.

The Futurist Skincealer is slightly more pink in undertone than the shade 4W in Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay in Place Concealer. To be fair, I do mix in some of shade 5W when I wear the Double Wear Concealer. So this problem is still technically a normal one for me to have with the Estee Lauder Concealer shades. I often have to mix shades in other brands as well.

The Packaging of Estee Lauder Futurist Soft Touch Brightening Skincealer

Estee lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Concealer vs Futurist Soft Touch Brightening Skincealer 4W Size Comparison

The bulky plastic packaging of this concealer may mislead you into thinking it has a lot of product inside. It’s not the best value for money compared to other concealers (even their own Double Wear Concealer, as you can see above). 6 ml isn’t necessarily a small size for a concealer; it is somewhat standard. However, I do feel like it was worth mentioning since the container looks larger than an average concealer. I know that they are advertising this as being a skincare/makeup hybrid, and that has a lot to do with it being priced higher than the Double Wear Concealer. But at the end of the day, it is concealer, and there are better-performing concealers at a better price for the amount of product. Some other concealers that would be a better value for your money are the Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer ($40 for .37 oz/11ml), Givenchy Prisme Libre Skin Caring Concealer ($37 .37 oz/11 ml but less coverage and more glow), and the Lancome Teint Idole All Over Concealer ($29 for .43 oz/13 ml more matte but not drying).

  1. Ah, I see you had the same issues as I did with the concealer shade range being way lighter than the equivalent foundation number…as well as the longevity issue and creasing. Such a shame considering the pretty finish it starts out with.
