Concealer Round-Up (Pat McGrath, Armani, Dior, Too Faced)

Soooo I went a little concealer crazy this past year. I used to have 2 concealers and didn’t seem to be bothered by that. Then for some reason, I got it into my head that I needed to try out more formulas. Admittedly, I’m still not the most experienced with concealer but since these were shades that I personally had trouble finding swatches of, I’m hoping this is helpful anyway.

I am in my late 30’s and my skin type is dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone. I look for medium to full coverage because I do have darkness both under and in the inner corner of my eyes as well as the occasional acne scar that I want to cover. Like many women of color, I also have discoloration around my chin area. If I do wear a foundation that doesn’t cover it well, I do rely on concealer to pick up that slack.

For shade reference, some of my best foundation matches are Estee Lauder Double Wear in 4W4 Hazel and NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in Tahoe.

**Pat McGrath Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Concealer (full coverage, matte, $34)

M21 – medium with neutral olive undertones

This concealer is full coverage, and a little goes a long way. It does look matte (not in a bad way), but it is drier than I would prefer on my skin type. I don’t like this concealer with finger application, but I do love it when applied with a brush (Sigma F79 is my go-to for concealer). It’s hard to explain, but the formula is kind of mousse-like, and I don’t like the feel of it as it’s blending out. I’m sure that is just a personal quirk. It also dries down pretty quick, and I feel like using a brush is more effective at getting it where it needs to go before it sets.

I don’t see the neutral olive undertone that this is supposed to have and it looks a little orange on me but it manages to still match me fairly well. I can even conceal dark spots and my under eyes with this concealer and skip putting foundation on entirely and it looks pretty natural. For my dry skin, this doesn’t need to be set when I use it for spot concealing and there is very minimal transfer. I do, however, have to set it when used under my eyes to minimize creasing. I am disappointed that it creases under my eyes, but pretty much everything does. However, when I use this for spot concealing, I can see why people rave about this concealer.

**Armani Luminous Silk Concealer (medium coverage, luminous, $42)

9 – tan to deep with an olive undertone

This is one of those products that I don’t have much to say about, but I just really like it. It offers medium coverage with a luminous finish. If you set it with powder (as I have to under the eyes), it becomes more of a satin finish. Keep in mind that I don’t use heavily mattifying powders due to my skin type. So if you pair this with a very matte powder, I think it would look more matte.

Armani Luminous Silk Concealer – 9

The formula blends easily with fingers or a brush. I wouldn’t advise using it with a beauty blender unless you are looking for light coverage, as the sponge tends to sheer it out. As usual, I set this when used under my eyes, but the creasing is very minimal compared to every other concealer I’m discussing today. I don’t notice any creasing when used on the face for spot concealing. As for the shade, it is a nice color for my under-eye area, but it does appear a touch gray around my chin and mouth. I really like this for my lighter coverage days. I personally don’t like the look of a full coverage concealer under my eyes when I’m only wearing a tinted moisturizer or skin tint. If you don’t need a ton of coverage and you like a healthy, luminous look, I highly recommend this one.

Update April 24, 2024: I now wear shade 8.75 and can use shade 7.5 in the winter or for brightening. Shade 9 seems to be discontinued.

Update September 2025: While this formula can be built to medium coverage, it just barely gets there for me due to the darkness under my eyes and the hyperpigmentation spots I have. Once I add powder, it becomes more matte, giving the illusion of higher coverage (but still medium max). The impressive part of this formula for me is that it wears well without much creasing. There is mica running through this formula, and I notice it most days as the day wears on. I see the mica all day if I am out on a sunny day. Just something to keep in mind, as I know it is a big negative in reviews I’ve seen. If you like a dewy look and don’t mind lighter coverage, this performs well.

**Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer (high-medium coverage, natural, $40)

4WO – medium skin with warm olive undertones
UPDATE March 4, 2023: I was shocked to find out Dior reformulated the Forever Skin Correct Concealer. I have tested out the new 2023 reformulation and posted a review. The short and sweet review is that the new formula performs even better for me than the original. It is easier to blend, creases less, and transfers minimally but it does now have added fragrance. If you’d like more details, you can check that post out by clicking here.

This has become a new favorite of mine, and I just recently did a full review that you can check out by clicking here. Since I just did that review, I won’t go into too much detail here, but I can give you an idea of how it stacks up against the others in this post.

Dior Forever Skin Correct 4WO Swatch on Medium Dark Skin
Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer in 4WO

This concealer is advertised as full coverage, but I personally think it falls on the higher end of medium coverage. It definitely provides more coverage than the Armani Luminous Silk Concealer. I do think that some people will get full coverage, but if you have intense dark under eyes or acne scars, I think you might also find it to be medium. In my experience, this formula does need to be set to avoid creasing and transfer. The shade match is one of my best both in terms of undertone and for using as an undereye concealer. It brightens more than I prefer to. I set it with a colored powder to tone it down. I need a little more depth for the discoloration around my mouth, but mixing in some of the shade 4.5N for that purpose has been working well for me. If you don’t typically have trouble with creasing or you use setting powder anyway, this is a beautiful concealer.

**Too Faced Born This Way Concealer (full coverage, natural, $30)

Cookie – medium with golden to olive undertones

This concealer offers the most coverage of the ones I’m discussing today. It has a natural finish, and even when set with powder, it seems to maintain that finish. The Born This Way Concealer has a creamy texture, which makes it easy to blend, but that also causes it to crease easily. Setting with powder does improve the creasing, but this concealer creases the worst when compared to Pat McGrath, Armani, and Dior.

In terms of the shade, this works nicely as an undereye concealer, but doesn’t look great around my mouth area. This concealer works well with any application method. I can see why so many people love this one; it is very easy to work with and covers well. If you can find a color match and don’t mind setting it, I think this could work for many people.

Coverage Comparison

I’m hoping this collage will help show the difference in coverage by looking at my veins. You can see them the easiest through the Armani Luminous Silk Concealer. Then the Dior Forever Skin Correct disguises them a little more than that. While I do consider the Pat McGrath to be full coverage, you can see that my veins do peek through just a little. Lastly, with the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, you can’t see the veins. This image also shows why it is important to let products dry completely before making a decision on the color. Especially with matte concealers and concealers with skincare ingredients, they can dry to a darker shade.

  1. The Too Faced Concealer is one of the rare products I have returned to the store. It creased horribly on me, which countless reviews hadn’t mentioned. At least I’m not alone in that experience and that happened for you too.

  2. Came across your blog and had to create account just to say I am very grateful for your page! We are same shade match and undertone, it is hard to find people with this amount of information so thank you so much. I have one question, do you plan on reviewing haus labs concealer and foundation? I’m feeling quite conflicted about shade 33 or 34 in the concealer and 330 and 325 in foundation and would love to see you give it a review.

    1. Thanks for sticking around and leaving a comment! I can’t try the Haus Labs because both formulas have ingredients I avoid due to sensitivities and allergies. Do you have a Sephora near you? Some locations still offer samples, so maybe you can try it that way.
