My Love-Hate Relationship With The Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer (4WO, 4.5N)

I feel like this concealer from Dior has received a fair amount of hype since its release in January 2020. One of the big reasons I wanted to give this a try is that even after a couple of years, I still hear people raving about it.

I initially just purchased shade 4WO but I ended up purchasing the shade 4.5N to see if mixing a custom shade would work better for spot concealing. I had to do this because there is no 4.5W or 5W shade that I could have tried. Ideally, it would have been nice to see a 5WO shade. I’ve been trying this concealer out since September 2021 and I have to tell you, it took some serious experimenting before I came to love it. Now that I know how to use it, I actually prefer it to my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. There is a lot to like about this concealer but as with all things, there are some drawbacks. Hopefully, I can give you the rundown so you’ll know if this concealer might work for you or if you should choose something else.

One of the biggest drawbacks to me is the shade range. The Dior website has 30 shades of the Forever Skin Correct Concealer, but Sephora only has 28 shades available.** The number of shades is great for a concealer range but unfortunately the deeper end of the range needs work. If you have a medium-deep to deep-dark skin tone and need a warm or cool undertone, you will have to find it somewhere else. 4W is the last warm undertone shade in this lineup. Depths 5-9 are only offered in neutral undertones. This is frustrating, to say the least. I’m used to being forced to choose a warm undertone when there is no olive undertone in my depth, but I find it strange to not even offer a warm undertone for darker skin tones. We know from Dior’s foundation range that they can make warm undertones in darker shades, so it confuses me that this concealer doesn’t follow suit.

Another big drawback with this concealer is how much it creases and settles into fine lines on me. When used as a spot concealer on the face, it does settle into my smile lines and accentuate them just a touch. Dior specifically states that this concealer won’t settle into facial lines, but that is just not the case for me. Everything creases to some extent, but my problem is when the product collects in the wrinkles and it creates lines that can be seen from a distance. That is what I experience with this concealer when it isn’t set.

When set with powder, however, the creasing is very minimal and you can only see it from up close in the mirror. I have also discovered that I get the least amount of creasing when I use this concealer with the beauty blender. It also creases less when applied with the Sigma F79 brush. When used with fingers the creasing is definitely the worst even if I set it with powder. I have no idea why that is the case.

As promised in the brand claims, this concealer has a natural finish. Of course, once I set it with powder, it is no longer a natural finish. When I use this with the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Powder it does mattify the concealer a little. The Laura Mercier Candleglow Powder has been the closest I’ve come to not mattifying the finish. However, the glow of that powder does technically change the finish a bit. This is a drawback to me simply because it would be nice to wear this without powder to enjoy its beautiful natural finish, but it does not stay put without being set with powder.

For shade reference, some of my best foundation matches are Estee Lauder Double Wear in 4W4, MAC Studio Fix Fluid in C8, and NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundations in Tahoe. I can use shade 4WO by itself as an undereye concealer, but for spot concealing on my face, I need a mixture of both shades.

So given the drawbacks, why do I keep using and enjoying this concealer? To put it simply, everything can’t be perfect. This concealer is comfortable to wear on my dry skin and setting it lightly with powder helps it wear well throughout the day. My go-to concealer before this was MAC Pro Longwear. While I don’t need to set the MAC concealer with powder to get a similar wear time and minimal creasing, it looks much drier on my skin than the Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer. I also love how this lays over bumpy texture. My skin looks smoother when I wear this concealer as a foundation. I don’t typically use it this way, but I do enjoy having the option.

The brand claims this is a full coverage concealer but I think some people may only get medium coverage out of it. If you have dark undereye circles or dark acne scars, I don’t think you will find this to be full coverage. It is on the higher end of medium coverage, but my dark circles and a new acne scar that is pretty dark, do peak through the coverage a little. This may be a drawback for some, but for me, I enjoy not being totally blanked out.

I haven’t tried that many concealer options on the market, so I can admit that I’m not the most experienced when it comes to concealer. Despite needing to be set with powder, this is a high coverage smoothing concealer and it has become my go-to product. I did watch a lot of reviews before making this purchase and most people find it to be full coverage and don’t complain about creasing. So as with anything, my experience is just one of many.
