Mac Glow Play Blush Review (Heat Index and Groovy Swatches)

I decided to go ahead and publish this review early because Mac Cosmetics just started a great sale.  You can get 30% off of blushes, highlighters, bronzers, and skincare through July 23, 2020, using the promo code “macjuly30” on their website.  Today I’ll be talking about the Glow Play Blushes, the brand’s newest formula.

Mac claims that this “bouncy-blush” has sheer to medium, buildable coverage and gives a radiant look.  Because of this unique texture, I want to start off by talking about the application method.  The brand recommends applying these with either fingers or a tightly packed synthetic brush.  The recommended brushes are the 159S (duo-fiber short bristles rounded shape), 128S (short dense 50-50 split fibre), and 109S (short dense dome shape).  The brush I used (Smashbox cream cheek) is short like the 128S but shaped more like the 109S.  The fact that this blush has a soft texture but isn’t a cream formula makes application a little different for those who aren’t familiar with this texture.

Although I wouldn’t say these dry down to a powder finish, they do set.  They do not feel tacky after application.  Groovy doesn’t work as easily as heat index.  It is stiffer in texture so it doesn’t pick up on the brush or blend as easily.

The Summer of the Bronzer

Estee Lauder Hot Spell Bronzer, Bobbi Brown Elvis Duran Bronzing Powder, NARS Punta Cana Bronzing Powder, Becca Ipanema Sun, Mac Totally Taupeless Bronzing Powder, Mac Sun Soaked Strip, Mac Your Wish Is My Command

Every time I turn around I swear there is another new bronzer being released.  Out of the new bronzer releases that have caught my eye I have purchased one limited edition and one permanent release.  I already did a full swatch post of my purchases from the limited edition Mac 2020 Summer Bronzing Collection if you want to check that out.  But in this post, you will get to see how the shade Totally Taupeless from that release compares to some others.

I also purchased the newly released NARS Bronzing Powder in the shade Punta Cana, if you have been wondering how that shade compares to other bronzers on the market.

NARS Punta Cana and Mac Totally Taupeless Bronzing Powder

Since Mac’s Bronzing Powder is the newest bronzer to the market that I’ve personally purchased that is the shade I used in every comparison grouping.  I included limited edition (LE) products that I own just in case anyone might be wondering how these new bronzers compare to items they may already have.  For foundation shade reference I am Mac C8 in studio fix fluid and Estee Lauder 4W4 in double wear (click this link to see them applied).

L’oreal Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush 425 Amber (swatch)

L’oreal Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush in 425 Amber

I’m pretty sure that this was my first experience with a blush by L’oreal and I am not disappointed.  I feel like they did a great job with the level of pigmentation.  You can go into the pan with any brush shape without being careful, but it still picks up enough color to show up.  In my experience, this blush works great with both synthetic and natural hair brushes.  The formula is easy to blend on the skin and despite the inclusion of emollient ingredients (i.e. coconut oil, mango seed butter), it behaves like a traditional powder formula.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Smoky Shadow Stick, Natasha Denona Bronze Eyeshadow Palette, Covergirl TruBlend So Flushed High Pigment Blush

If you follow the beauty industry closely, then you know that new releases are happening all the time.  So let’s discuss what new products are on my radar right now

Covergirl Trublend So Flushed High Pigment Blush in 360 Sweet Seduction Swatch and review
Covergirl 360 Sweet Seduction

Covergirl TruBlend So Flushed High Pigment Blush, $7.99 (I ended up purchasing this blush, see the review here): I’ve been upset that Covergirl discontinued their baked version of the TruBlend Blushes for so long now.  I am happy to see a relaunch of the blush line but disappointed that it isn’t the baked version being released in a larger shade range.  There are still only 3 shades being offered so it remains to be seen how versatile the shades will be across skin tones.  Covergirl is claiming that this formula has a “cream-feel,”  which makes me wonder if it will have a similar look on the skin as the old TruBlend formula.  If you’ve given any of these a try, let me know what you think of the formula.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Smoky Shadow Multi-Use Waterproof Color Stick, $23.00:  I really enjoy this brand and it feels very underrated these days.  This vegan formula can be used as a shadow or liner and promises to be creaseless, smudge-proof, and waterproof.

The last eyeshadow crayon I can remember using was the Milani Shadow Eyez Pencil in Cafe-Au-Lait.  Now that eyeshadow crayons seem to be easier to find in a better variety of shades (Covergirl, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown), I wonder if we’ll see Milani bring those back. UPDATE January 28, 2022: Milani has started to release shadow sticks again. The Gilded Shadow Stick retails for $6.99 and comes in 4 shades.

I’m pretty sure people never stopped using the NYX Jumbo Eye pencils, but I think they used to have more shades.  I’m interested to see if anyone on Youtube will review these.  I know MakeupShayla usually features Make Up For Ever new release, so if the brand sends out PR on this release maybe she’ll get them.

Givenchy Le Rose Perfecto Liquid Balm Review

Givenchy has turned its iconic lip balm into a liquid gloss formula.  I think that if you read the description from Sephora and that is what has piqued your interest, you will likely be disappointed and feel that this lip gloss claims to be a balm.  However, according to the description on Saks, it is actually called a liquid gloss formula.  I purchased the shade 14 Nude Soul.

Givenchy Le Rose Perfecto Liquid Balm, $36.00

Givenchy Le Rose Perfecto Liquid Balm 14 Nude Soul Swatch

This balm starts off as a lip gloss, but as it wears away it feels more like a balm.  On my lips, the color is a light pink.  It has a slight scent that doesn’t linger for very long.  Surprisingly, it does hang around through drinking and eating for 2 to 3 hours and I still feel like there is a balm on my lips even a little while after that.   I can also feel that it did help my chapped lips after just one day of wearing it.  I also feel like my lips feel softer and smoother after I use it.  It does have a tingle at the start of wear thanks to pink pepper that is supposed to plump the lips.  If you’ve ever used a gloss or lipstick with peppermint oil in it, then this will feel similar to you.  I didn’t notice any plumping effect from the tingle and it goes away fairly quickly.  I really like this and do feel it performs a lip balm function but with a nice sheen on the lips and gives a hint of color.

Buy High/Buy Low: Foundation Buffing Brush

Buy High: Smashbox Blurring Foundation Brush, $32.00

Buy Low: e.l.f. Ultimate Blending Brush, $6.00

elf ultimate blending brush vs smashbox blurring foundation brush, dupe, alternative
Smashbox Blurring Foundation Brush vs elf Ultimate Blending Brush

Both of these brushes work well for those who like to apply foundation in a buffing motion.  They can also be used to stipple for more coverage when needed. I truly feel like I can get the same results from both of these brushes.  The biggest application difference is coverage level.  The e.l.f. Ultimate Blending Brush has a shorter handle and the closer your hand is to your face, the more pressure you use.  This translates to heavier coverage.  If you are aware of that you can be careful to use less product and that will lessen the coverage you get.  If you like higher coverage that won’t be an issue.  The Smashbox Blurring Foundation Brush gives you more flexibility in coverage simply because you’ll naturally hold the brush further down because the handle is longer.  The Smashbox brush also has markings on the handle that indicate where to hold the brush depending on the coverage level you want.

Juvia’s Place The Nubian 3 Coral Palette (Swatches and Color Combinations)

Juvia's Place The Nubian 3 Coral Palette swatches on medium dark skin

The Nubian 3 Palette by Juvia’s Place is a little underrated in my opinion.  In a time when so many people are complaining that makeup releases are all looking the same, I do not think this palette got enough shine when it was released.

Juvia's Place The Nubian 3 Coral Palette swatches on medium dark skin

When it was first released I feel like there were some criticisms about the color story not being coral enough.  Every color exists on a spectrum of the shades mixed to create them.  So for instance coral is a color that falls in between red and orange.  So with orange being a mixture of yellow and red, every coral created is going to have different amounts of yellow, orange, and red present in the mixture.  What that means, is that some corals are going to have more of an orange tone to them because they have more yellow and others are going to be pinker in tone, because they have more of the primary red pigment.

The Swatches – Juvia’s Place Nubian 3 Coral Palette, $20.00

So to me, there are 6 corals in this palette that range from a light pink coral to a deep red coral.  It is also important to keep in mind that we all see color differently and that is fine.  The way shades appear on different skin tones will also matter.  But to me, this reads as a coral palette.  I also think that the addition of varying tones of gray gives this palette a unique twist on being neutral without the ever-popular warm mid-tone brown.

Keep reading for some color combinations.
