Pat McGrath Celestial Odyssey Luxe Quad: Bronze Borealis

If you didn’t know, Pat McGrath’s Holiday collection landed on her website at the end of September. Although I was disappointed at the repeat shades in the blush/highlighter palettes, I couldn’t resist getting something from the collection. I decided on the Luxe Quad in the Bronze Borealis shade. This quad does not contain any of the special shades, but that is actually good for my preferences.

I’ve only had the chance to do 3 eye looks so far, but since this is limited edition I wanted to go ahead and share swatches and my thoughts.

Sonia G Eye Shadow Brushes (Builder Pro and Classic Crease)

Sonia G Classic Crease (left) and Builder Pro (right) Review
Sonia G Classic Crease (left) and Builder Pro (right)

I know I’m late to the Sonia G brush game, but after a lot of research, I finally decided to give them a try. I’ve been testing these since July, so I’ve got a good feel for them. I am a novice when it comes to Fude (handmade, Japanese makeup brushes), so I’m unable to give you thoughts on where the Sonia G brushes stack up against more direct competitors.

Sonia G is so thorough on her blog (www.sweetmakeuptemptations.com/) and in her product descriptions on Beautylish that I really don’t think I can express the functionality of these brushes any better than she already does. I have found her descriptions to be accurate to my experience and she does a ton of comparisons on her blog. She shows how her brushes compare to each other and how they compare to other brands on the market. In my opinion, you get full transparency. So my best suggestion for those interested in her brushes is to check out her blog and the product descriptions on Beautylish.

So why am I writing this blog post? I’ve had such an enjoyable time using the builder pro that I honestly just wanted to shout from the rooftops about it. To me, the builder pro is more unique than the classic crease brush, so I thought about only talking about that one. However, since I have both, I figured I could show them for the fun of it. Don’t get me wrong, the classic crease brush is a nice brush, but to me, not as unique in function as the builder pro.

When Dupes Aren’t Dupes For You

I know how hard it can be when you are interested in a product that everyone is raving about but for whatever reason, you can not get the product.  That feeling is likely part of the reason why dupes are popular. I just feel like sometimes they narrow in on price and sometimes leave people out.  I’m not sure what I hope to accomplish with this post, but I do wonder if there is a better way to approach dupes.

I’m not going to mention any specific examples of videos are blog posts because I’m not aiming to shame anyone for creating dupe content or anyone for wanting dupes.  I definitely think that presenting alternatives can be helpful.  There are times when you can save some money and other times when you don’t want to or can’t purchase certain items.  I have even written some dupe-like content with my Buy High/Buy Low posts.  So again, I do see that there is value in this type of content.

Dupes can be especially disappointing when the options presented save money, but end up excluding skin tones.  I do realize that we can only speak to our own personal experiences and that all content creators are doing their best to provide helpful content for their audience. I can also appreciate that as content creators, we can see what content people are enjoying the most and some can even see the demographics of our audience. So some of these issues may purely relate to the demographics the creator is seeing represented.

Despite that, I still find it hard to understand the oversight that often happens with dupes when it comes to availability. I’m not just talking about dark skin tones either, sometimes there isn’t enough variety for most people. For example, in the past, there was a hyped foundation dupe but it only had 4 shades, but the product it was supposed to dupe had 40 shades. Then there is the inevitable comment of “I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this.” The limited shade range means limited access for a lot of people. I feel like the same thing often happens with highlighter and bronzer dupes. Shade ranges have come a long way, so I do think there is always some sort of alternative. But maybe we could all do better to at least consider if a dupe is actually widely accessible before making the suggestion.

Another issue that I’m not really sure how to unpack is that dupes can often disparage drugstore products. There are plenty of great products at the drugstore and I think they don’t always need to stack up against something that is higher end. I know that I compare product formulas quite often and it seems necessary to give you a point of reference in order to create context. But I hope I’ve been able to compare items without making it seem that a drugstore/affordable item isn’t as good simply because it happens to cost less. I also hope I haven’t made it seem like a product is better simply because it costs more.

What Can You Do?

So let’s say you find yourself in that situation. You’ve learned about a dupe and wanted to buy it, but as it turns out there isn’t a good shade for you, you can’t use an ingredient in the formula, or you don’t want to support that company. What can you do?

Pat McGrath Labs Divine Blush Comparisons (Nude Venus vs Divine Rose vs Paradise Venus)

A few weeks back when I reviewed the Huda Beauty Cream Lipstick in Money Maker, I had a conversation in the comments with Lili (as we tend to do lol) about buying multiple colors of the same product. While I’m now trying to do better about only buying one shade of a formula, that did not happen in the instance of the Divine Blushes from Pat McGrath. On Saturday, Lili and I were talking about Holiday collections, and how Pat McGrath is releasing two blush/highlighter palettes. Lili found out from the Trendmood Instagram account that one palette has the shade divine rose and the other has the shade paradise venues, both of which I already own.

Since I don’t want repeat shades, I’ll be passing on both of the palettes, but I was thinking it would still be helpful to share the swatches of the blushes that I own. If you are trying to decide on buying single shades that are already for sale, it may be helpful to see the ones I have next to each other. If you haven’t purchased any of the blushes yet and are considering the holiday palettes, this may help you get an idea of which one to lean toward. I did post a full review when these were released that you can check out by clicking here if you want to know about performance.

Sensitive Skin Fails – Powder Foundations (Too Faced and L’Oreal)

Too Faced Born This Way Multi-Use Complexion Powder in Butterscotch
Too Faced Born This Way Powder Foundation Butterscotch
L'oreal Age Perfect Creamy Powder Foundation 340 Caramel Beige Swatch
L’Oreal Age Perfect Creamy Powder Foundation 340 Caramel Beige

These two powders are great powder foundation options for dry skin (in my experience), they just didn’t work out because I also have sensitive skin. If not for the reactions I had, I would have continued to use these products so I wanted to give them a mention.

Too Faced has a 25% off friends and family sale going on now through September 30, 2021 at 11:59 PST (promo code is TFBESTIE). So if you have your eye on this or any other Too Faced items, now is a good time to get them.

I do want to make it clear that these are not dupes or alternatives to one another. I do think they perform differently. I am only grouping them together because they both caused skin irritation and didn’t work out for me.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation Review ($10 Off Foundation Sale Going on Now)

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (C8, NC45)
MAC Studio Fix Fluid in C8 and NC45

MAC is running a promotion for $10 off of foundations and it ends at 3:00am EST on 9/28/2021. No promo code is required, the prices are already marked down on the website. So if you need to restock or have been wanting to try any of the MAC foundations, this is a good sale. They also offer free shipping over $25. So any foundation, with the exception of the stick foundation (because it is on clearance), will qualify for free shipping.

UPDATE JUNE 12, 2024: This information is based on a discontinued formula. MAC released a reformulated version of Studio Fix Fluid in 2024. If you are looking for reviews, you can spot the difference because the new formula now comes with a pump built into the packaging.

At this point in history, I’m sure a lot of people don’t need a review of this foundation. But there are always new people just getting into makeup, or even just discovering MAC. So maybe this can still be helpful for someone out there.

On to the review, the swatches, and how the shades C8 and NC45 look on me.

Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick (406 Antoinette and 438 Suzanne Swatches)

Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lipstick 406 Antoinette and 436 Maggy Swatches
Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour – 436 Maggy

Chanel claims this lipstick is hydrating, full coverage, and lightweight. In my opinion, they hit the mark on two of those three claims.

I have tried 3 shades in this range over the years and none of them have been full coverage. I do however think they are light weight and lightly hydrating. I think these have a medium coverage, but the shade 436 Maggy is more sheer on initial application than the others I have tried. I don’t consider this to be a bad thing, but it does mean that your natural lip color does play a bigger role in how these shades will appear more than an opaque formula. The formula is comfortable and it doesn’t feather into fine lines around the mouth. As with all Chanel lipsticks, this formula does have a scent. It has the traditional rose scent, that I’m pretty sure Chanel typically uses. I have read that the Rouge Coco line also has a hint of violet to the scent, but I can’t personally pick up on it. The scent is strong enough to smell, but I don’t find it to linger and it doesn’t bother me.

Huda Beauty Cream Lipstick in Money Maker and Sweet Cheeks

Huda Beauty Money Maker Power Bullet Cream Glow Hydrating Lipstick Money Maker Swatch
Huda Beauty Money Maker Cream Lipstick

If you aren’t familiar with All Tingz Kay on YouTube, I’m happy to introduce you to her channel. I had seen a few people using the Huda Beauty Power Bullet Cream Glow Lipsticks, but it wasn’t until I saw Kay feature the shade habibi that I decided to check them out for myself.

I went to Sephora expecting to just get the shade habibi, but after seeing it in person, it was slightly too cool in tone for my preference. The shade money maker is just a little warmer than habibi, so it works better for me. I did really like the range of shades and I may purchase sweet cheeks at some point as well.

I think the shade range has a lot of nuance that will help a lot of skin tones find a shade that works. On the downside, I do think that it is easier to make sense of those nuances in person. If you are interested in this line of lipstick and you can safely visit a Sephora, I’d recommend doing that. The Sephora I went to is allowing testing with some restrictions. You can swatch things on your hand, but you have to use a disposable applicator to take the product from the tube.

If you can’t get to a Sephora or don’t feel safe doing so, the brand has taken some of the guesswork out of making a choice. They have them broken into two color categories: sweet nudes and bossy browns. Then within those categories, the colors are labeled as being light, medium, or rich. The shade I picked, money maker, is medium and falls in the bossy browns.

Update March 27, 2022: I recently purchased a new shade, sweet cheeks, and have added some new information below. Sweet cheeks is a medium shade and is part of the sweet nudes.

Keep reading for swatches and my thoughts.
