I’ve always struggled with dry skin, but in the last year especially, I’ve been having more trouble getting away with matte finishes. I used to be able to use matte concealers and skip setting powder. But now, even if it looks fine, matte concealers dry my skin out if I wear them for two or more days in a row. That led me to try more hydrating concealers, like the Too Faced Ethereal Light Illuminating Smoothing Concealer.

**Too Faced Ethereal Light Illuminating Concealer, $29.00

The downside of hydrating concealers is that they typically have less coverage than matte concealers. If you have dark under eyes like I do, the Too Faced Ethereal Light Concealer is medium coverage (that’s what the brand claims). The brand also claims a natural finish, but I think it is more radiant. For reference, it is less radiant than the Armani Luminous Silk Concealer, so it does look more smoothing than that concealer. When I wear this concealer, it gives me coverage but also looks the same in finish as my moisturized skin. I use heavy oil-based moisturizers, so that is something to keep in mind.

Gingernap is a good shade for me, and it helps camouflage my darkness nicely on days when I use a tinted moisturizer or lighter coverage foundation. When I wear fuller coverage, I do want more help with my darkness. That is where the major benefit of this better together concept comes into play. By using the Too Faced Ethereal Light concealer layered over the corrector in the MAC Conceal and Correct Palette, I get better coverage, which helps me enjoy using the Too Faced Concealer more. The shade Caramel Drizzle is too dark for me by itself, but it is the next shade with a warm undertone. It is handy for mixing into Gingersnap because I get darker pretty quickly when the weather warms up.

The MAC Corrector also helps the Too Faced Concealer wear better on me. Too Faced claims that this concealer is non-creasing, and while I don’t think that is true for any concealer, I will say that it has minimal creasing for about 3 hours. After hour 3, I do notice some creasing, but then by the end of the day, it looks fine again. I can’t really explain that, but it’s something I continually noticed before I started pairing this with the MAC Corrector. The MAC Corrector, on its own, doesn’t crease very much on me, so I’m not surprised that it would help the Too Faced Concealer out in that department. However, I do set this pairing with a light layer of powder because after about 6 hours, the MAC also creases on me. For me, if I can’t see the creasing from a reasonable distance, I consider it minimal. If the pigment from the concealer starts to settle into fine lines and wrinkles to the point where I can see lines under my eyes while looking in a mirror at a distance, then I consider it creasing badly.

While I do think this is a good concealer for someone looking for a lighter, natural-looking coverage, I won’t personally repurchase it. I’d prefer if it had a little more coverage so I could wear it alone. If I didn’t review makeup, I don’t think I would bother owning a color corrector and would just opt for a higher coverage concealer. At present, the Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer (you can see my review by clicking here), is the concealer I fall back on because it has high medium coverage and doesn’t dry me out. I do wish the Dior Concealer didn’t have fragrance, but I haven’t had any issues with it on my sensitive eczema-prone skin since I started using it in February 2023.

I don’t want to make it sound like you should go out and purchase a second product to make a product you’re having trouble with work. But if you already own something that could help that product out, I’d encourage you to experiment and use them together.
