Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 689 Mitzah (Swatches)

I know that small eyeshadow palettes from luxury brands aren’t for everyone, but they are definitely a favorite of mine. I love smaller eyeshadow palettes and quads in general, but Dior eyeshadow palettes never fail me. I just find them easy to use and flattering to wear.

The empty tray on the right usually holds a double-sided sponge tip and a double-sided brush. Sorry, I’ve already gotten rid of them and don’t have them to show you. I haven’t used them since I tried my first Dior palette back in 2016 or 2017 so I wouldn’t be able to tell you much about how they work anyway.

Update February 28, 2025: This is the old formula of the Dior 5 Couleurs; they were reformulated in 2023. You can spot the new formula by checking for corn starch in the ingredient list. If it has corn starch, it is the new formula.

Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette (689 Mitzah), $62

The Dior 689 Mitzah eyeshadow palette has 2 soft metallics, 2 satins, and 1 matte. It is described by Dior as a “leopard-themed eyeshadow palette with heightened femininity in shades of amber, bronze and copper.” I describe the top two shades as soft metallics because they provide more shine than the middle and bottom left shade, but they aren’t heavily metallic. The top right shade (top middle swatch) looks like a topper shade but I have been able to get enough pigment out of it to wear it on its own. While it does have more sparkle to it than the other shades, it doesn’t provide as much sparkle as the swatch suggests.

As you may have noticed, this eyeshadow palette only has one matte, and it is very dark. Despite being very pigmented, it is easy to control and build slowly, or it can be used intensely as a liner. Since this deep shade is the only matte, I do want to point out that if you want a mid-tone for the crease, the best option is the shade right in the middle. It has a satin formula, so in my opinion, it isn’t too shiny to be used in the crease. However, if you are someone who prefers a matte in the crease, you won’t be happy with the amount of shine it gives. The bottom left shade is also a mid-tone, but it does have some smokiness to it, so it can be built up to add dimension to the outer-v. While it is a pretty shade, if they had switched this out for a mid-tone matte, this would be more functional as a stand-alone palette.

These Dior shadows work well with fingers or a brush (natural or synthetic). They blend very easily without blending away completely, and they get along well with other eyeshadow formulas. The fact that they layer well over and blend into other formulas easily is important for those who like a mid-tone matte to use as a transition shade (and don’t mind using one they already own as a companion to this palette). Helpful for those of us with textured eyelids, the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette is smoothing on the eye. I have lines on my eyelids and often get some eczema flares, and this formula never accentuates those issues, nor does it further irritate my eczema. I’ve had this same experience with every Dior eyeshadow palette I’ve owned, so I think Dior just excels in this area. It also helps that these eyeshadows aren’t super metallic, since metallics can accentuate texture. If you are looking for high impact, then this likely won’t be the option for you. But it is nice for those who like a simple eye look without much fuss.

The Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 689 Mitzah can be purchased for $62.00 at Nordstrom and Sephora. The Dior website does have more color options available.

  1. This curation reminds me of the Tom Ford Honeymoon Quad, but at a better price and comparable quality (based on your description). That’s interesting! I’ve always wanted to try a Dior quint, but their own photos always make the colors seem more dull and muted than they apparently are because I like your photo of it better than Sephora’s. lol.

    1. I would say that your instinct is right and they do tend to be muted. I haven’t tried the actual formula, but I think there is more saturation in the bigger Backstage Palettes. It’s been so long since I’ve used a Tom Ford quad but I definitely can’t argue that it’s a better price 😂.

      1. I can’t remember if I’ve asked your opinion of the Guerlain Ombres G quads that were released on preorder and then removed from Guerlain’s site and are supposed to be coming back near the end of this month I think? They’re $89, so I just can’t do it without an eventual discount, but I really want to try the super basic most neutral one…and I’m thinking… who am I? Why do I want it so badly? lol. It might just be desperation to be interested in another Guerlain product because I like what I have but so little from the brand ever interests me enough to be worth getting. If I want something like it, as we’ve established, going with Dior seems like a much better option. So if I don’t get that, I’m going to try and use that logic for why I shouldn’t get the guerlain one. lol

        1. The Guerlain quads are so beautiful. I think they look slightly better in the pan than the swatches look, but hopefully they will perform well, especially at $89 😳. Guerlain is one of those brands that I tend to avoid. I tried the bronzer way back when it was one of the few options for woc and the fragrance was just too much for me, so I never tried anything else.

          1. Ah yes, Guerlain loves their violets. lol. Shockingly, I really love the smell, but it’s admittedly quite potent. lol. And despite me enjoying it, I do prefer if they had fragrance free options.

  2. It’s nice to see that Dior stays true to their subdued but timeless approach to makeup. With the current popularity of intense metallic finishes, satin eyeshadows seem to have been forgotten… but you are right, they are great for textured eyelids. I suffer from dry eyelid skin every once in a while, and intense mattes or intense shine are two great ways to tell the world I have a skin condition.
