While the Morphe Solo Artist Priming Cream Eyeshadow ($10) in Mixtape isn’t quite as warm as I had hoped, I think it performs well considering the challenges that my eye shape throws its way.

Caramel brown is the color description for the Morphe Cream Eyeshadow in Mixtape (on the Ulta website), but it appears cool-toned and pink-leaning when applied. I compare the shade to MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Contemplative State and the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Sepia below to put it into perspective. For shade reference, my best matches are NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Tahoe and Estee Lauder Double Wear 4W4 Hazel, and have a warm olive undertone.

**Morphe Solo Artist Priming Cream Eyeshadow, $10

I like applying this formula best with a brush. When I’ve used it with my fingers, it was harder to spread and got a little patchy. Getting back to those eye shape challenges I mentioned. I have slightly hooded lids, so I typically use an eye primer regardless of the eyeshadow I’m using. Especially in the inner corner area, my eyelids can get oily due to friction. Because of this, I default to using an eyeshadow primer with everything the first time I test it. Mixtape blends out smoothly when worn alone, but applying it on top of an eye primer is more challenging. Don’t worry, you can use the formula alone if you don’t want to use a separate eye primer. However, the Morphe Cream Eyeshadow does wear better for my crease-prone eyelids when I use another eye primer, and the performance was just ok on its own. I have slight creasing after about 4 hours when I use it without eyeshadow primer. The creasing doesn’t look too bad, and I didn’t have any patchiness, but I do have other tinted cream products that perform better for me (e.g., MAC Paint Pot, Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeshadow Sticks). I don’t mind using it with an eyeshadow primer, but if you’re also prone to creasing and want an all-in-one product, that’s something to keep in mind.
Morphe Mixtape vs MAC Paint Pot in Contemplative State

The Morphe Solo Artist Cream Eyeshadow is a good alternative to the MAC Paint Pot formula. I do think the Morphe Cream Eyeshadow is a little easier to work with than the MAC Paint Pot, but the drier texture of the Paint Pot does help it outperform the Morphe Cream Eyeshadow. MAC’s Paint Pot has 5g of product, compared to 3.2g in Morphe’s product. However, at $28 for MAC, you could buy two of Morphe’s products and still save $8. Plus, all Ulta coupons can be applied to Morphe products.

Morphe’s Solo Artist Priming Cream Eyeshadow in Mixtape is a decent choice if you are looking for an eyeshadow base or a wash of color to wear, and you don’t have too much trouble with creasing. I do think it has enough dry down and grip to wear well for most people. But as with all things, your mileage may vary. While it doesn’t outperform other cream shadows I regularly use, I do think it is an excellent value if you don’t have as much trouble with creasing.
That’s all for today, have a good one. 🙂
