Tom Ford Eye Color Quad Olive Smoke

Tom Ford Eye Color Quad 47 Olive Smoke Swatches Medium Dark Skin

Tom Ford Beauty recently released two new Eye Color Quads in 47 Olive Smoke and 48 Peach Glamour ($95). Although the packaging of this quad doesn’t say it is a creme formula, it is listed with the previously released Eye Color Quad Cremes from Tom Ford Beauty. I’ve never tried the other formula, so I can’t compare them directly. The formula is a wet feeling powder, similar to the Natasha Denona creme to powder formula.  The colors are beautiful, pigmented, and easy to apply. Unfortunately, I have had a lot of trouble with creasing and fading. Dimethicone is the first ingredient in all of the shades, even the matte black. So at first, I suspected that the creasing was because my eye primer (MAC Prep and Prime 24-Hour Eye Base) is also dimethicone heavy. But after wearing it a lot more over the last month, I can tell you this creases on me, no matter what primer or base I use. Let’s look at some swatches, and then I’ll let you know which primer/base worked best for me.

I took the second picture at a slightly different angle in an attempt to show the dimension of the shades. Except for the matte black, the other shades have the one-and-done quality of appearing brighter when they are placed on the lid, but can provide some depth if placed in the crease or outer-v. The lightest shade likely won’t give the same result if you have a deeper skin tone. The lightest shade provides the quad with some versatility, allowing for a brighter look, but it delivers on the smoky aspect when paired with other shades. For shade reference, my best matches are NARS Natural Radiant Longwear in Tahoe and Estee Lauder Double Wear in 4W4 Hazel.

Over the last month, I have tested this formula with four different eye primers/bases, and it wears best with the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick. Unfortunately, I still had fading with all four primers. I had minimal creasing throughout wear with the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick, but it doesn’t intensify the color, an aspect I enjoy about the MAC Prep and Prime Eye Base. However, the downside was that I experienced the most creasing, which occurred very soon after application when I used it with the MAC Prep and Prime Eye Base. That made the MAC primer the worst performing with the Tom Ford Olive Smoke Quad. The second best primer was the Urban Decay Primer Potion, which I did get some creasing with, but it was minimal, and I didn’t notice it until about 4 hours into wear. The third best primer/base was the MAC Paint Pot in Contemplative State. The Paint Pot creases more quickly and noticeably than the Urban Decay Primer Potion, which is not typical for me when using a Paint Pot.

My eyes are slightly hooded, and I occasionally experience creasing issues. However, they are usually solvable with at least one of my primers. My takeaway is that the Tom Ford Olive Smoke Quad pairs best with a drier primer/base. The Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks aren’t drying for me, but I would say they are the driest base out of the four I tested.

Based on how the Tom Ford Olive Smoke Quad performs for me, I can’t recommend it. But to be honest, I would have hesitated to recommend it at its $95 price tag, even if it had wowed me. That is a lot of money when I also like the Charlotte Tilbury Quads, which are $55, the Pat McGrath Luxe Quads, which are $62, and the Dior Quints, which are $68. If you are interested in Tom Ford eyeshadow, I would steer you to the Wet/Dry formula, and I haven’t had any issues with it creasing or fading on me. The Olive Smoke Quad has beautiful shades, but this formula was a miss for me.

    1. I haven’t seen anyone else with creasing trouble, but it could be that they haven’t had a chance to use it a lot yet. Hopefully the CT will help you resist, much more versatility with that one anyway. Good luck!
