As usual, Westman Atelier has me scratching my head about whether I’m happy about this purchase. You may understand what I mean if you saw my review of their Vital Pressed Skincare Powder. This brand hasn’t missed with packaging for my taste, and this is no exception. The concealer is housed in a heavy, coated glass bottle with a doe foot applicator. The length of the doe foot is short, but I haven’t personally struggled to use it. So why am I confused with this one? My problem is not that it is a bad concealer. I was just having trouble justifying the price in my head after spending some time getting to know the formula. The truth is that I have cheaper concealers that can match the performance of this for my 41-year-old, dry eczema-prone skin type. Let’s get into the details.

**Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Concealer, $48
Update October 2, 2024: Sephora has updated the size information to reflect the correct amount of product. I want to start by pointing out a discrepancy in the Sephora product information. The Sephora website lists this concealer as having 10mL of product, but my box and the bottom of the concealer state that it has 6mL. I have included a photo of my box so you can see the size for yourself. Hopefully, you could tell in the images at the beginning of this post how small it is, but if not, check the size comparison below. The Lancome concealer I used is only for reference in size and shade. The formulas are not dupes.

If you are unfamiliar with Westman Atelier, it is a luxury, clean beauty brand. Each brand can define clean beauty for itself, so it is a hard term to unpack. But what that means for the Vital Skincare Concealer is that it is fragrance-free, phthalates-free, paraben-free, talc-free, silicone-free, and cruelty-free. As the name suggests, this concealer contains good skincare ingredients like gentian root, coffee leaf extract, licorice root, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. If those things are important to you or necessary for your skin type, they are an added bonus over some other offerings on the market. For the claims, I will refer you to the table below. Then, I’ll expand on some things after.
| Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Concealer Claims | Do I agree? |
| Medium to full coverage (buildable) | Kind of. It does build to full coverage, but the coverage fades throughout wear, so it really maxes out at medium coverage. I also got better coverage when using my fingers. |
| Natural finish | Yes, but looks pretty matte on my dry skin by the end of the day. |
| Blurs | Yes, but minimal. Matte finish concealers do more to blur, but it is a surprising bonus coming from a natural finish concealer. |
| Self-sets (doesn’t need powder) | Yes. Surprisingly, it wears better on me without powder. On the days that I wore powder over it, I lost more coverage, and I saw more obvious creasing when I wore a certain powder that is typically reliable for me. |
| Creaseless | No, it sinks into lines and wrinkles, but it isn’t very noticeable from a normal viewing distance (unless I set it with powder). |
| Adds Moisture that lasts after removal | Hard to say. Since I use other products with hyaluronic acid and peptides, I can’t isolate this concealer as a source of moisture. However, it is not drying and very comfortable to wear. |
In addition to my dry skin type, I have a crease-prone under-eye area. So, I have to set most of the concealers I use if they go under my eyes. While the Vital Skincare Concealer is supposed to be creaseless, that just wasn’t the case for me. When I paired this concealer with powder, I got the worst results. In my experience, it is very uncommon for a concealer to wear better without powder. To wear it without powder, I blend it out using my fingers and leave it alone while I do my foundation. Then, I blend out any creases/settling that I see, and it wears well from there. After about 8 hours, this looks dry on me, and I can see where it has settled into my lines. On the upside, I could only see that by getting close to the mirror and contorting my face. As I mentioned above, I do lose coverage when wearing this, but I think it still looks like medium coverage at the end of the day. It is comfortable to wear and looks nice throughout the day. It gives a slightly blurred look that helps my under-eye hollows look more flat, which I appreciate. My only issues with it can only be seen up close and toward the end of the day.

Westman Atelier T2 vs Lancome 435W

As with all products, this had a learning curve. Once I figured out that it applied best with my fingers and wore better without powder, I felt better about it. I think it performs fine, but in the future, I would rather get more product for the money I paid. When I think about the performance of the **Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Concealer ($48) and the claims, I can’t help but be reminded of the Estee Lauder Futurist Skincealer, which is $36 for the same 6mL. It also has medium buildable coverage, contains hyaluronic acid and peptides, vitamin C (which the Westman Atelier doesn’t have), and gives a similar natural finish. I have to set the Estee Lauder concealer, but it wears better and longer without losing coverage. On the other hand, Estee Lauder isn’t silicone-free or cruelty-free, and its packaging isn’t nearly as luxe. So, as with all things, it depends on your concerns and preferences.
