The Wanderlust List #2 (Uoma Black Magic Poise Palette)

The Wanderlust list is about pausing before buying something new to see if you have a product that already fits that “need.” If you like this style of content, you can check out my other versions of the Wanderlust List below:

Uoma Beauty is a newer brand to the makeup market that seems to be getting nothing but praise. I can ignore most of the excitement, but the Uoma Beauty Black Magic Palette ($44.00)** in the shade Poise keeps creeping back onto my wish list.

I have some shades from Make Up For Ever (MUFE, $17.00)** that can give me a similar look and vibe. These shades are alternatives (rather than dupes) that I’d be happy to use instead of spending $44.00 on a new palette. Since I’ve never seen this palette in person, I can’t speak to how similar or different my alternatives are in quality and texture. But, I can tell you that MUFE eyeshadows are great quality for those that like an eyeshadow formula that is pressed firmly in the pan.

MUFE Artist Color Shadow (more swatches)

I recently did a swatch post for two new colors I had recently purchased from MUFE’s line of single eyeshadows.  Doing that post reminded me that I’ve had pictures of the other shades I’ve owned from the brand.  So I thought I’d finally edit and put together a swatch post for them.  I wish that each Sephora carried the entire line of shades because I found it very hard to find swatches of this new formula online.   I guess it is possible that some of the bigger locations have the full range.  Hopefully, this post will help anyone that’s been curious about these shades.

As a fan of a drier, harder pressed eyeshadow, these are some of my favorites.  They build and blend easily and the shimmers work well with brushes and fingers.  There is one exception for me, S606, is hard to work with and I was not a fan of that formula.  I don’t think the quality of that shade is anywhere close to the others.

One downside of these shadows for me is my preference for a circular pan.  I do think the palettes that they sell to hold them look nice and are good quality.  A downside of the formula being harder pressed means that when it comes to the shimmer shades you may find it necessary to dig slightly into the pan to get pigment on your brush.  I don’t have a problem with fallout, I’m just careful not to overload my brush.  I find that some eyeshadows just have to be used this way and it doesn’t cause an issue for me.

If you are not familiar with MUFE artist color eye shadows, they are sold individually in a plastic case that is intended to be temporary.  MUFE is a makeup artist brand, so the intention is that you build the palette you need for the jobs you work.  The brand does obviously cater to the general public as well, but they stick to their artistry roots.  So you will have to purchase a sturdier case for these items unless you already have space in a zpalette or similar magnetic palette.

$17.00 per shade (compact to hold the pan is not included)**

All compacts regardless of size are $2.00** (you need the extra small size to hold 1 eyeshadow)

Buy This Not That: No Smudge Lip Liner

I recently decided to give the MUFE lip liner formula a try and it immediately reminded me of the Maybelline Shaping lip liners.  I have been using the Maybelline liner formula since 2017 and am a big fan of the formula, but it does seem to dry out before I can finish the product.  The reason I know it dries out is because eventually what is left in the pencil falls out, meaning that as it ages it dries and shrinks down, no longer fitting into its housing.  All liners like this (twist up) can dry out, so I’m not saying there is something extremely wrong with the product, but it does mean that I’ve been repurchasing it before I actually get to use the entire product. The MUFE liner is not a traditional pencil formula, but it does need to be sharpened, whereas the Maybelline is a twist up that does not need a sharpener.

Maybelline Colorsensational Shaping Lip Liner Divine Wine, $7.99**

vs

Make Up For Ever (MUFE) Aqua Lip Waterproof Liner Pencil 11C, $20.00**

At first glance, the price difference between these two items seems like a no brainer.  However, you get more product in the MUFE liner.  The Maybelline pencil only has .01oz of product while the MUFE has .04oz, so you will have to repurchase it less often if it is something you intend to use regularly.  Additionally, considering my experience with the Maybelline drying out, it has to be replaced before you actually make it through the product.

MUFE aqua lip in 11C (left) and Maybelline shaping lip liner in divine wine (right)

In terms of formula, Maybelline is drier to apply (even over lip balm).  I find that it dries down matte with no tackiness and lasts well throughout the day.  The MUFE formula has a smoother application and looks smoother on my lips.  The MUFE liner does remain feeling tacky although it technically does dry down in my opinion.  So if you use a lip liner as a base for lipstick to improve longevity, you may want to look into the MUFE option.  The fact that it remains tacky will give your lipstick something to grab onto.  As an alternative MAC Prep + Prime Lip ($20.00 @ Ulta**) is clear, making it more versatile for this function.

Both MUFE and Maybelline claim that these liners are creamy and long-wearing.  The MUFE does claim to be waterproof but I’m not sure about that.  Both liners transfer slightly onto my cup when drinking but I would still consider them both to be long-wearing.  Compared to a lip liner that you have to sharpen, I would say they are both creamy. You do have to sharpen the MUFE liner, but it is creamier than most pencil lip liners I’ve used.

Due to the value for money, smoother application, and appearance on the lips, I’d buy the Make Up For Ever 11c aqua lip liner**, not the Maybelline divine wine lip liner.

The only instance in which I’d recommend the Maybelline divine wine lip lier** over the MUFE is if you wear lip liner as a lipstick.  The Maybelline may be better suited to your taste because it dries down completely and doesn’t have a tacky feel when your lips touch.

Have you tried either of these lip liners?  What has your experience been?  If you haven’t tried either, what is your favorite lip liner?

MUFE Artist Face Color (Swatches)

Make Up For Ever Artist Face Color H106 (MUFE highlight) and B402 (MUFE blush) swatches on dark skin
H106 – shimmery champagne highlight B402 – vermillion blush

The highlight is a dense formula, but I never find it difficult to pick up on any brush I use. I wish they offered another color that fell in between this one (H106) and H312 (shimmery gold copper highlight).  I think that shade wise that would suit my skin tone better because this can look icy if I’m not careful.  I do have dry skin and often find that it makes it more difficult for me to wear highlights without them looking dry and accentuating the texture on my cheeks.  I think that more normal or oily skin types might find that this shade melts into the skin more and may not come off icy or dry on their skin.

You have to be careful with this blush shade, it can get intense very quickly.  I like it applied best with a fluffy blush brush and I don’t have an issue getting it to blend well. I prefer using my Estee Lauder blush brush ($42)** with it which is a natural hair brush.  If you don’t like natural hair brushes or the price tag on the Estee Lauder brush, the Sigma F10 ($25)** is the same shape and the brand website has very frequent sales.
